New Smyrna Beach Canal Street Car Show to continue on

After being a monthly event on Canal Street for over 23 years, there was concern across social media that the car show may end. The City of New Smyrna Beach recently made the event organizers aware that they would have to start paying for police and fire safety. This concerned the event organizer, Pat Teehan as he said there is no way he could afford those fees. After meeting with New Smyrna Beach City Officials, the fees were eventually waived in an agreement with all parties involved and the car show will continue on.

I recommend all residents and visitors give the car show a try and experience the atmosphere. It is a great family event and falls on the second Saturday of every month.

City of New Smyrna approves rezoning request for 745 home community known as Shell Pointe Colony

The City of New Smyrna Beach approved a rezoning request to make way for a 745 home community on the southwest corner of Pioneer Trail and I-95 to be called Shell Pointe Colony. This is in addition to ICI’s planned development known as Woodhaven to be just to the north which will have 1,300 homes and 400 apartments.

Florida Power & Light seeking rezoning for new solar site in New Smyrna Beach/Samsula area

The Volusia County Planning and Land Development Regulation Commission on March 14, 2017 is scheduled discuss rezoning the old “Kirkland Sod” location in the New Smyrna Beach and Samsula areas for a new public utility site. The parcels border SR44 to the south and Ranchette Road to the east.

Florida Power & Light purchased the location in 2016 and is looking to rezone 1,192 acres. A majority of the property is presently cleared and per the PLDRC packet, FPL hopes to make it a universal solar energy center with photovoltaic panels placed around the majority of the 1,192 acre parcel.

Volusia County Staff recommends approval of the zoning change. Should the PLDRC also recommend approval, the zoning request will be brought to the County Council. Per the PLDRC website, this has tentatively been placed on the County Council’s April 20, 2017 public hearing.
